Translation: In the time of John Chrysostom;[1] he maintained a way of life in accord with his episcopacy. Having trained and finished his time in the ascetic school of the church he was recognized as a most noble champion, both teaching by word and confirming that word in his life. He succeeded Porphyrios.[2] That man was eminent by the shrewdness[3] of his thoughts; but Alexander by his training and philosophy and frugal life and the flow of his words and countless other advantages of grace.
