Headword: *thqe/las
Adler number: tau,471
Translated headword: granny's-boys
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning ones] reared by their grandmother.
Greek Original:
*thqe/las: tou\s mammoqre/ptous.
Notes:
cf. generally tau 469.
The present entry derives from a scholion on Aristophanes, Acharnians 49, where the phrase 'Phainarete my tethe' (*Fainare/thn th/qhn e)mh/n) occurs. The scholiast's comment is: 'tethai is what they used to call grandmothers, and tethelai those [boys who were] reared by their grandmother'.
The entry treats and glosses thqelas (scholiast) or thqe/las (Suda) as accusative plural, but LSJ s.v. seems to present thqela=s (so accented) as nominative singular.
