Headword: *(rigoi=
Adler number: rho,162
Translated headword: is cold
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning he/she/it] grows cool, is held from [= by] cold.[1]
3rd conjugation of the perispomenon [verbs].[2]
"You seem to me to be quite cold [r(igw=n]." Instead of r(igou=n, in Doric dialect. Aristophanes in Birds [sc. writes this].[3]
Greek Original:
*(rigoi=: yu/xei, sune/xetai a)po\ kru/ous. g# suzugi/as tw=n perispwme/nwn. pa/ntws de/ moi r(igw=n dokei=s. a)nti\ tou= r(igou=n, *dwrikw=s. *)aristofa/nhs *)/ornisi.
Notes:
[1] Likewise in the Synagoge (rho35) and Photius (rho116 Theodoridis). The headword -- third person singular, present indicative, of r(igo/w -- must be quoted from somewhere; there are numerous possibilities.
[2] That is, o-stem contract verbs. Similarly in the Etymologicum Magnum.
[3] Aristophanes, Birds 935 (web address 1), with scholion. As LSJ note, r(igo/w in Attic has an irregular contraction giving -w=n in the infinitive rather than -ou=n; the scholiast regards this as a Doric form. Chantraine (s.v. r(i=gos) says that the forms of r(igo/w (or rather, r(igw/w) are analogical with i(drw/w ("shiver" being the opposite of "sweat").
