Adler number: pi,870
Translated headword: child-slaying
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning] child-murdering.[1]
Greek Original:
*paidoleth=ra: paidofo/non.
The transmitted headword is the accusative singular of the consonant declension noun paidoleth/r, -h=ros, o(; see LSJ s.v. This exact form of the headword, unattested outside lexicography, also appears in Eudemus (cf. epsilon 3411), peri\ le/cewn r(htorikw=n s.v.; Lexica Segueriana 325.15; and ps.-Zonaras 1496.23. (But see n. 1 below.)
The entry is out of alphabetical sequence, though Adler reports that mss AFM give the headword as paidwleth=ra, which would restore it. (This last spelling is otherwise unattested.)
[1] The gloss is the masculine/feminine accusative singular form of the two-ending adjective paidofo/nos; see LSJ s.v. This same word, however, is used in Photius, Lexicon pi30 Theodoridis, to gloss a close cognate of the headword -- the accusative of the noun paidole/teira, h(, murderess of her children (LSJ s.v.) -- quoted from Euripides, Medea 849 (web address 1); and cf. also Hesychius pi74.
