Headword: *para/logon
Adler number: pi,385
Translated headword: illogical, unexpected, unpredictable
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Some, and particularly Thucydides, use [this] as a masculine, [to mean something] unexpected and what one might not expect; for example, "the unpredictable [aspect] of war,"[1] and "much that was unexpected happened."[2]
Procopius [writes]:[3] "the others calculating the illogicality of the number, they thought[4] that his idea was crazy."
And elsewhere: "the Romans took encouragement and disbelief at the events more even than those who see unexpected visions."[5]
[sc. Concerning] the illogical[6] Thucydides [writes]: "and the Athenians were entirely dispirited; the unexpectedness [of the situation] was in their minds great, and even greater was their regret for the campaign."[7]
And elsewhere]: "by clever and misleading tricks, they ever repelled [the Goths] day after day and gained mastery over our possessions by unexpected means."[8]

Notes:
The first paragraph here comes from Photius, Lexicon pi386 Theodoridis (= Aelius Dionysius p16, in Wentzel's view) and is used also in a scholion (214.8-11 Rabe) on Lucian, Abdicatus 6. For other references see Theodoridis ad loc.
[1] Thucydides 1.78.1 (web address 1).
[2] Compare generally Thucydides 2.85.2 (web address 2) & 3.16.2, but no exact parallel is to be found. Other authors, imitating Thucydides, present similar phrases: Plutarch, De libidine et aegritudine (Ziegler) 4; Cassius Dio 42.18.1; Appian, Mithridatica 426.
[3] For Procopius see generally pi 2479. The following excerpt is an approximation of History of the Wars of Justinian 4.13.7.
[4] The Suda's text is ungrammatical here. As can be seen from Procopius, "the others" here are the same people who "thought that..."
[5] Quotation unidentifiable (but apparently also from historiography). Adler notes Kuster's suggestion that 'encouragement' (tharsos) should be 'amazement' (thambos).
[6] This new reference to the headword adjective is now in the masculine. As this entry has earlier suggested, Thucydides seems to use para/logos as a masculine substantive.
[7] Thucydides 7.55.1 (web address 3).
[8] Procopius, History of the Wars of Justinian 7.16.22 (= Constantine Porphyrogenitus, De Legationibus (de Boor) p. 114); cf. pi 314. The object of "repelled" (e)kkrou/ontes) is missing in the Suda's text, and I have supplied it from Procopius.
