[Meaning a] covering.[1]
Sophocles [writes]: "an ornament of a contest, for the sake of Delphic prizes." With the gymnastic contest not yet being in existence.[2]
"[...] under a pretext of economy, holding to barbarian stinginess."[3]
Greek Original:
*pro/sxhma: paraka/lumma. *sofoklh=s: pro/sxhm' a)gw=nos, *delfikw=n a)/qlwn xa/rin. w(s ou)/pw o)/ntos tou= gumnikou= a)gw=nos. prosxh/mati oi)konomi/as barbarikh=s e)xo/menoi smikrologi/as.
For this headword see already pi 2852. The present entry, likewise, begins and ends with LSJ's sense I of it, but in between illustrates sense II.1.
[1] Similarly glossed (by proka/lumma rather than the Suda's paraka/lumma) in other lexica; references at Photius pi1384 Theodoridis.
[2] Sophocles, Electra 682 (web address 1), with a simpler version of a learned scholion thereto; the latter actually reads 'in the time of Orestes there was not [sc. yet] a Pythian competition'. (The era-date of the Pythian games was 582 BCE.) The sense of the Sophocles passage itself is somewhat obscured here, first by the Suda compiler's decision to quote only line 682 (thus missing out the genitive, at the end of 681, that actually goes with pro/sxhm': 'of Greece') and then by Adler's punctuation with a comma after a)gw=nos. The full passage translates as: "coming to the renowned ornament of Hellas, for the sake of a contest of Delphic prizes".
[3] Diogenes Laertius 7.16 (on the meanness of the philosopher Zeno; 'holding' should be singular, not the Suda's plural).
