Wife of Theodosius the Great.[1] She was a pious women who loved the poor, and she personally attended to the diseased and the lepers. She died first, before her husband; and the emperor's anger demonstrated especially the emperor's affection for her. This anger was directed against the people of Antioch, who, irked by the public taxes that the emperor had imposed on the cities under the pretext of the never-ending wars, had pulled down and dragged away the stele [sc. commemorating her]. [This was] also when [John] Chrysostom wrote the [27 Homilies on] Statues.[2]
