*ph/ganon, probably rue or Ruta graveolens L., was a famous abortifacient used by Roman and Greek physicians (Soranus from Riddle 1992, pp. 47, 91). Also allegedly used against insect bites, hysteria, and to improve eyesight. It has a complicated chemical composition and is probably mutagenic (Paulini & Schirmer 1987, p.271).
