The headword, in the accusative plural, is a hapax legomenon that appears at Homer, Iliad 2.153 (web address 1 below), "and they started clearing out the ship-trenches" (ou)rou/s t' e)ceka/qairon). The scholiast on that passage indicates that the word had been of interest to scholars at least as early as Aristarchus. Pollux 10.149 includes the headword under "equipment of a shiphauler" (newlkou= skeu/h ).
