Headword: *nisso/menos
Adler number: nu,427
Translated headword: going
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning one who is] turning back.[1] Also [sc. attested is] ni/sonto ["they went"], [meaning] they turned back.[2]
They say [it is formed] out of the [verb] nei+/w, [meaning] I go, whose future is nei+/sw; for otherwise the diphthong ei[3] is used freely, as if it derives from ne/w;[4] and [it is] also likely that it is redundant in form as a result of the two sigmas.[5]
Greek Original:

[1] The headword participle must be quoted from somewhere, perhaps Greek Anthology 9.702, attributed to Simonides: "descending (nisso/menos) from Olympus to Earth".
[2] Homer, Iliad 12.119, 18.566.
[3] Adler initially printed 'the reading', but see n. 5 below.
[4] The etymologies derive the verb in question, ni/ssomai, from ne/w; they probably mean ne/omai "go" (root *nes-/nos-, reduplicated zero-grade *ni-ns-). *nei/w is offered as a hypothetical variant of ne/w in the scholia to Homer, Odyssey 4.701, and in Eustathius of Thessalonica, Commentary on the Odyssey 9.58.
[5] The infinitive at the end of this last clause, taken from the margin of ms M, was initially printed as o)noma/zesqai ["is named"] by Adler, with no note of any textual variants or problems. However, in her consolidated addenda and corrigenda she adopted two changes to this material (cf. n. 3 above), including the pleona/zesqai translated here.
