This word did, as the context required, mean either a large unquantifiable number (cf. the Japanese "banzai!") or else 10,000. However, the difference of accentuation claimed here and elsewhere (paroxytone = indefinite, proparoxytone = definite) is not observed in ancient mss: see LSJ s.v.
