The [prefix] pro/ ["before"] [is used] instead of para/ ["beside"].
To arrive before [proi+knei=sqai] [sc. is another instance of this].
Some [sc. say it comes] from i(/cesqai,[1] which is to take some gift.
Archilochus [writes]: "that man will not come off well."[2]
But Herodian in the Epimerismoi says [it comes] from i)/ssw.[3]
And Archilochus [writes]: "I stretch out a hand and I beg a gift."[4]

From a gloss on Herodotus 3.156.3 (where the headword appears, in a phrase quoted at the end of kappa 730), also in Etymologicum Magnum 689.1, partly from Orion [Author, Myth] 133.24; cf. a scholion on Homer, Odyssey 17.352.
Besides kappa 730, cf. also (for this verb) kappa 732.
[1] The infinitive i(/cesqai is future of i(kne/omai "I arrive". According to LSJ s.v., the most likely etymology of kataproi/comai is from kata - pro - i(kne/omai, not from proi/c, proi=ka (as suggested at kappa 730).
[2] Archilochus fr. 200 West (which should read, before the verb, e)me/o de\ kei=nos "... will not come off well from me").
[3] Herodian the grammarian I p. XXXII Lentz. The alleged verb i)/ssw probably comes from a mis-division of proi/ssomai.
[4] Archilochus fr. 296 West. This verb proi/ssomai is apparently derived from the noun proi/c (pi 2983).
