Headword: *)esxatia/n
Adler number: epsilon,3253
Translated headword: extremity, farthest part
Vetting Status: high
[Meaning an] ultimate place of earth/land. Or those regions which have pasturages, as Aristotle also says in [book] 8 of Politics.[1]
[Note] that the [nouns] meaning collection and property are all oxytone: a)xurmia/ ['chaff'], futalia/ ['planted place'],[2] purkai+a/ ['funeral pyre'],[3] a)nqrakia/ ['charcoal-burning'],[4] e)sxatia/ ['farthest part']. Thus too trasia/ ['drying place']:[5] it is a place where there is a quantity of dried figs or cheese or whatever. And the word ai(masia/ ['dry-stone wall'][6] is also thus from contingency.[7] The [words] e)cesi/a ['embassy'], o(si/a ['divine worship'] are no contradiction in practice.

The headword is the accusative case (which therefore goes for the initial glossing also). It must be quoted from somewhere; extant possibilities begin with Pindar (Olympians 3.43, Pythians 11.56) and include Aeschines (1.97-98) and [Demosthenes] (42.5 & 19). The scholia to both Olympians 3.43 and to Aeschines 1.97 pass comment on the word there.

[1] (Aristotle, Politics 7.1330a1415, implicit.) Likewise in Photius and other lexica.
[2] i.e. an orchard or vineyard.
[3] See pi 3226.
[4] See alpha 2523.
[5] See tau 913.
[6] See alphaiota 189.
[7] On this phrase cf. alpha 930 and the note there. It is not obvious what the contingent attribute of a dry-stone wall is.
