[sc. A proverbial phrase] in reference to silly/unintelligible people.
Greek Original:
*diqura/mbwn nou=n e)/xeis e)la/ttona: e)pi\ tw=n a)dianoh/twn.
This phrase, though not in the paroemiographers, is transmitted to us (and expressly called proverbial) by the scholiasts to Aristophanes, Birds 1393, such as Tzetzes (Commentarii ad Aves 1392, ed. Koster). The reference is to the parody of Cinesias (kappa 1639) and the other exponents of the new dithyramb (delta 1029, kappa 2647, pi 3225,etc.) in Birds.
Compare generally Lucullus's retort to Pompey: "do I seem to you to have less sense than the cranes and the storks?" (Plutarch, Lucullus 39.5).
