[1] A euphemism which needs a context to give it a precise meaning. (See e.g. Machon ap. Athenaeus, Deipnosophists 13.582D (13.45 Kaibel), where -- pace LSJ s.v. -- it refers not to fellatio but to incest.) The particular vice of Aristyllos (sic) is generally assumed, from the passages about to be quoted, to have been coprophilia, though J. Henderson, The Maculate Muse (New Haven 1975) 185, nos.386-7, prefers fellatio.
