In Appendix Proverbiorum 3.35 and Macarius 2.38 the Suda's explanation appears alongside another one, about suspicions of theft (said to be a charge comically levelled at Argives -- cf. alpha 3771). Additionally, the App.Prov. quotes Sophocles fr.201h (from the Eriphyle), where the phrase seems to originate.
