Headword: *zofera/
Adler number: zeta,105
Translated headword: dark, dusky, gloomy
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] shadowy.[1] Also [sc. attested is] zofero/n[2] [used] likewise.
Greek Original:
*zofera/: h( skoteinh/. kai\ *zofero\n o(moi/ws.
Notes:
[1] The primary headword is feminine nominative singular of the adjective zofero/s. It has the Attic form zofera/ here, but the epic/Ionic form zoferh/ in Hesychius and in Apollonius' Homeric Lexicon; either way, evidently quoted from somewhere. (It is attested in Hesiod but not, in fact, in Homer.) For the gloss cf. zeta 106, zeta 107.
[2] Masculine accusative singular or neuter nominative/accusative singular of the same adjective. Again, it must be quoted from somewhere; there are numerous possibilities.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; epic; poetry
