Adler number: upsilon,140

Vetting Status: high

[Meaning] drawings-back. "Both advances and retreats", says Thucydides.[1]
And elsewhere: "and [they] being more than moderately afraid to move off into a retreat".[2] Meaning into a drawing-back.
Greek Original:
*(upagwga/s: ta\s a)naxwrh/seis. diw/ceis te kai\ u(pagwga/s, fhsi\ *qoukudi/dhs. kai\ au)=qis: kai\ pe/ra tou= metri/ou deimai/nontas e)s u(pagwgh\n metani/stasqai. a)nti\ tou= u(panaxw/rhsin.
Notes:
The headword is accusative plural, evidently quoted from somewhere --not (despite the impression given), the Thucydidean phrase proffered, which is nominative plural in the original. Perhaps, rather, the very similar one in Procopius, History of the Wars of Justinian 8.8.20).
