Adler number: theta,420
Translated headword: rushing, bold
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[qou=ron] and [sc. also attested is] qou/rios: [meaning] springing, quick, most/very warlike.[1] In the Epigrams [it is written]: "another of the Cretans was wont to be a bold man."[2] "Bold Ares drew [...] from the Argives and the Lacedaemonians."[3]
Greek Original:
*qou=ron kai\ *qou/rios: phdhtiko/n, taxu/n, polemikw/taton. e)n *)epigra/mmasi: a)/llos a)po\ kra/tas qou=ros a)nh\r e)/qeto. *qou/rios *)/arhs e)/spasen *)argei/wn kai\ *lakedaimoni/wn.
Notes:
cf. theta 419.
[1] Likewise or similarly in other lexica -- but kai\ qou/rios, here, intrudes ungrammatically into what is otherwise an accusative singular (taken to be quoted from Homer) and its glosses.
[2] An approximation of Greek Anthology 6.126.2 (Dioskorides/Dioscorides), from the shield of the Cretan warrior Hyllus; cf. Gow and Page (vol. I, 85), (vol. II, 245-246), and another excerpt from this epigram at delta 379. Gow and Page note (vol. I, 85) that following the Anthologia Palatina the Suda transmits a)/llos ("another"), but they adopt a suggestion of C.G. Heyne (German classicist, 1729-1812) that the Cretan's rather common name *(/ullos should be read instead (vol. II, 245).
[3] Greek Anthology 7.244.1-2 (Gaitoulikos/Gaetulicus), abridged. On this epigram, a dedication of swords from the Battle of the Champions, see Page (56-57) and another excerpt at theta 420. On this famous battle (at Thyrea, mid-C6 BCE) see gamma 486, omicron 86, and Herodotus 1.82 (web address 1).
