Headword: *qo/los
Adler number: theta,402
Translated headword: Tholos, Round-House, Rotunda
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A round building [sc. in Athens], in which the prytaneis used to dine. In some special sense it was named the prytaneion, since it was the storehouse [tamiei=on] of wheat [purw=n].
Greek Original:
*qo/los: oi)=kos periferh/s, e)n w(=| oi( pruta/neis ei(stiw=nto. prutanei=on de/ ti i)di/ws w)no/mastai, e)pei\ purw=n h)=n tamiei=on.
Notes:
Virtually the same entry in Timaeus' Platonic Lexicon (probably generated by the mention of the Tholos in Plato, Apology 32D) and in Photius' Lexicon. For the Tholos see also theta 403.
Although Athens' prytaneis (pi 3000) did dine in the Tholos, the Tholos and the Prytaneion (equated again at pi 2999) were two different structures, and the etymology offered here for the latter is highly dubious.
