Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Aelian [writes]: "whom, rather than anyone/anything, I might prefer to associate even with all tyrants and with those who have come forth greatly in wealth."[1]
And elsewhere Aelian [writes]: "I might value my whole life [as worth] three days, if I did not have those who care for me."[2] Meaning I might exchange.
Greek Original:
*timhsai/mhn: *ai)liano/s: o(\n a)\n e)gw\ timhsai/mhn pro\ panto\s suggene/sqai kai\ pa=si tura/nnois kai\ toi=s e)pi\ me/ga plou/tou proh/kousi. kai\ au)=qis *ai)liano/s: timhsai/mhn to\n bi/on pa/nta trihme/rou, ei) mh\ e)/xoimi tou\s e)mou\s khdemo/nas. a)nti\ tou= a)lla/coimi.
Notes:
[1] Aelian fr. 180 Domingo-Forasté (177 Hercher), quoted more briefly at pi 2417. As Adler notes, Aelian is alluding to Croesus' words in Herodotus 1.86.4 (to\n a)\n e)gw\ pa=si tura/nnoisi proeti/mhsa mega/lwn xrhma/twn e)s lo/gous e)lqei=n).
[2] Aelian fr. 181 Domingo-Forasté (178 Hercher). Adler notes that Kuster conjectured, and ms F reads, trihme/rou. Mss AGVM read trihmoi/rou which seems meaningless. Kühn suggested trithmori/ou "a third part" (sc. of one's life). Bernhardy would regularize the grammar by adding a)\n and changing the future optative a)lla/coimi to the aorist optative a)lla/caimi (which is the reading of ms V).
