Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] a cord.[1]
"[... a] line straight-stretching, lead-loaded."[2]
"[...] as [if] they would not find a man very esteemed of [= for] friendliness in the line of the Faliscans."[3]
Greek Original:
*sta/qmh: to\ sparti/on. sta/qmhn i)qutenh= molibaxqe/a. w(s ou)k a)\n eu(ro/ntes a)/ndra fili/as e)n th=| tw=n *fali/skwn sta/qmh| dokimw/taton.
Notes:
[1] Synagoge sigma190, Photius sigma490 Theodoridis (with copious references to similar entries elsewhere). The headword, a feminine noun, occurs first in Homer; its nominative singular, here, might be quoted from Iliad 15.410 (if it is not simply generic).
[2] Greek Anthology 6.103.1 (Philip of Thessalonike), with the headword in the accusative singular. See further excerpts from this epigram--a retiring carpenter's dedication of his line, plumb bob, and other tools--at alpha 3875, mu 1071, pi 2298, sigma 1761, and psi 12; cf. Blümner (234-235).
[3] Quotation (transmitted, in Adler's view, via the Excerpta of Constantine Porphyrogenitus) unidentifiable, exhibiting the headword in the dative singular. It is translated here as transmitted, but note Bernhardy's rearrangement and modification of the second part of the phrase as follows: a)/ndra tw=n *Fali/skwn e)n th=| fili/as sta/qmh| dokimw/teron "a man of the Faliscans more esteemed in the line of friendliness". For the Faliscans of central Italy, in any event, see under alpha 3979.
