Headword: *skeuoforei=on
Adler number: sigma,564
Translated headword: vessel-carrier, yoke
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[skeuoforei=on]. Also [sc. attested is] sitofulakei=on ["granary"]; but [sc. contrast] skeuofula/kion ["storehouse"], and xartofula/kion ["document-case"].
Greek Original:
*skeuoforei=on. kai\ *sitofulakei=on: skeuofula/kion de/, kai\ xartofula/kion.
Notes:
Lacking any substantive glosses, this entry is all about form rather than substance; specifically, which neuter nouns such as these should have the suffix -ei=on (see Herodian, De prosodia catholica 3.1.375, and Theognostus, On Orthography 779, at least for the present headword) rather than -ion.
This entry is lacking, Adler reports, in ms F, while ms A presents nothing but the primary headword. (The remainder of the entry seems to be information imported from chi 143.) That headword, prompting it all, is probably quoted from Plato Comicus (fr. 50 Kock and K.-A.), or else from Aristophanes (fr. 852 Kock, now 886 K.-A.), although in both instances the textual evidence favors the spelling skeuofo/rion.
Keywords: botany; comedy; daily life; dialects, grammar, and etymology; food; trade and manufacture
