Adler number: sigma,1321
Translated headword: mulberry
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A kind of tree.[1]
And a tumor or lesion which occurs both on the eyes and on the [?]seats, which is also called a fig.[2]
Greek Original:
*suka/minon: ei)=dos de/ndrou. kai\ sa/rkwma/ ti h)\ e(/lkos gino/menon e)pi/ te toi=s o)fqalmoi=s kai\ tai=s e(/drais, o(\ kai\ su=kon le/getai.
Notes:
[1] The tree should be suka/minos (feminine), and the fruit suka/minon (neuter). Hesychius sigma2223 s.v. suka/mina says "that which some call more/a, the tree;" cf. sigma2234.
[2] (Addendum lacking, Adler reports, in mss AFV.) From sigma 1327, except for the phrase "and the seats" which is added here. The addition, unparalleled elsewhere, appears to be polemical, given the insistence of the scholia vetera on Aristophanes, Frogs 1247, that these warts occur only on the eyes. 'Seats' here probably means backsides/rumps, though one might be tempted to replace tai=s with a)/llais, i.e. the eyes and other sites.
