Headword: Σάβοι
Adler number: sigma,12
Translated headword: Saboi
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Demosthenes [in the speech] On Behalf of Ktesiphon [sc. mentions them].[1] Some say that Saboi is the term for those who are dedicated to Sabazios, that is to Dionysos, just as those [dedicated] to Bacchos [are] Bacchoi. They say that Sabazios and Dionysos are the same. Thus some also say[2] that the Greeks call the Bacchoi Saboi. But Mnaseas of Patrai[3] says that Sabazios is the son of Dionysos.
Notes:
Abridged from Harpokration (and Photius) s.v.
cf. sigma 3.
[1] Demosthenes 18.260.
[2] The transmitted text has, wrongly, "he says" (and τῶν Ἑλλήνων for what should be τοὺς Ἕλληνας ); cf. Harpok.
