Adler number: pi,533
Translated headword: he took over the city
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
["He took over the city] not in the state known to our ancestors, but as an old woman wearing slippers and living on barley-gruel".
Greek Original:
*pare/labe th\n po/lin, ou) th\n e)pi\ tw=n progo/nwn, a)lla\ grau=n sanda/lia u(podedeme/nhn kai\ ptisa/nhn r(ofou=san.
Notes:
= Photius pi369 Theodoridis.
The quotation comes from the Athenian orator and politician Demades (delta 414, delta 415), via [Demetrius], On elocution 285 Radermacher, but it has undergone change during the process of transmission. Above all, the original does not begin with the words 'he took over the' (pare/labe th\n); and from a substantive point of view, if Demades really did write them, to whom was he alluding? Also, after 'ancestors', Demetrius has th\n nau/maxon, which Cobet and Naber wanted to emend to th\n *Maraqwno/maxon (cf. alpha 4343).
