Adler number: pi,501
Translated headword: will strip
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning he/she/it] will remove.[1]
Thucydides [writes]: "they did away with themselves [...] some making [nooses] with the ropes from the beds, others making strips (that is, things removed) from their garments, they hung themselves."[1]
Greek Original:
*parairh/setai: a)fairh/setai. *qoukudi/dhs: die/fqeiron sfa=s au)tou/s, oi( me\n a)po\ klinw=n spa/rtois, oi( de\ e)k tw=n i(mati/wn parairh/mata poiou=ntes [toute/stin a)faire/mata] a)ph/gxonto.
Notes:
[1] = Synagoge, Photius pi231 Theodoridis. The headword is future middle, third person singular, of paraire/w. It must be extracted from somewhere; there are extant possibilities in e.g. Diodorus Siculus (5.70.1, 18.25.3) and Cyril of Alexandria.
[2] An abridgement of Thucydides 4.48.3, in reference to the end of the civil strife on Corcyra. The quotation contains not the headword but a related noun. The parenthetical gloss 'things removed' is not attested in the extant commentary on Thucydides and may be the Suda's own, tying the quotation in with the headword and gloss derived from lexicographical sources.
