Headword: *purgoba/reis
Adler number: pi,3201
Translated headword: bastions, fortresses
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] forward-defences, the stronger [sc. sorts] of towers.[1]
Interpretation of a dream: a falling tower shows [...]; see above.[2]
Greek Original:
*purgoba/reis: promaxw=nes, oi( o)xurw/teroi tw=n pu/rgwn. lu/sis o)nei/rou: pu/rgos pesw\n dei/knusin: a)/nw zh/tei.
Notes:
The headword, a nominative plural of the compound noun purgobaris, is evidently quoted from somewhere, probably the Septuagint (nominative in Psalms of Solomon 8:19, dative in Psalms 121:7), to which commentators refer (see n. 1 below).
For baris alone, which has this sort of sense amongst others, see beta 115.
[1] So far the entry = Synagoge pi807, Photius pi1555 Theodoridis; cf. epsilon 1946.
[2] This sentence (which, Adler reports, occurs only as a marginal note in ms M), is puzzling on all counts: it seems more appropriate for another entry (e.g. pi 3206 where the headword is 'towers'), it is not from Astrampsychos (alpha 4251, the Suda's usual source for dream interpretation), and it seems incomplete. One might suppose that a falling tower in dreamland signifies that the dreamer should 'see above' (i.e. 'look up') lest something real in the waking world fall upon him/her, but more likely 'see above' is a vague cross-reference that leads nowhere.
