Headword: Προῖκα
Adler number: pi,2979
Translated headword: freely
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] as a gift, without pay.[1]
Also [sc. attested as] a locative adverb meaning (?)where.[2]
"But things which are often brought freely to their completion [...].". Meaning without toil.[3]
Greek Original:
Προῖκα: δωρεάν, ἄνευ μισθοῦ. καὶ τοπικὸν ἐπίρρημα ἀντὶ τοῦ ὅπου. τὰ δὲ καὶ προῖκα πολλαχῆ τοῖς ἑαυτοῦ τέλεσι πεπορισμένα. ἀντὶ τοῦ ἄνευ κόπου.
Notes:
cf. pi 2981, pi 2983.
[1] cf. scholia on Plato, Apology 19E and Laws 931A; also Hesychius and other lexica.
[2] This sentence is problematic as it stands (no such sense is attested in LSJ s.v., nor could it be easily imagined). Adler's apparatus notes mss variants for 'where' (ἄπου , ὅπως ), as well as Bernhardy's wish to delete 'meaning'. Etymologicum Magnum 689.11 has ἐπίρρημά ἐστι ποιότητος , 'an adverb of quality'.
[3] cf. pi 1215.
