Headword: *proforoume/nw
Adler number: pi,2925
Translated headword: shuttling
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning the two of us] traveling here and there to the opposite. For 'to shuttle' is the term for passing the thread along the warp threads. Aristophanes in Birds [sc. uses the word].
Greek Original:
*proforoume/nw: deu=ro ka)kei=se poreuo/menoi ei)s ta)nanti/a. proforei=sqai ga\r le/getai to\ parafe/rein to\n sth/mona toi=s diazome/nois. *)aristofa/nhs *)/ornisi.
Notes:
From the scholia to Aristophanes, Birds 4, where the headword -- present middle participle, nominative dual masculine, of the verb profore/w -- does (uniquely, outside the scholia and the Suda) occur. (Oddly, Photius, Lexicon pi1421 Theodoridis, changes the headword into the commonplace proforou/menoi, which has no manuscript authority.)
Dunbar ad loc. (pp. 134-8) doubts the weaving-based explanation given here and elsewhere (Phrynichus the Atticist 104.1, Pollux 7.32, Hesychius pi4068, Photius).
