Headword: *pwliko/s
Adler number: pi,2163
Translated headword: colt's, foal's, filly's
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] noble.[1]
Also [sc. attested is the phrase] pwliko\n dh=gma kai\ [to\] fru/agma ["colt's bite and [the] snorting"].[2]
Greek Original:
*pwliko/s: o( gennai=os. kai\ *pwliko\n dh=gma kai\ [to\] fru/agma.
Notes:
[1] For the headword adjective, see already pi 2162. The present entry's gloss on it (which is also in the Ambrosian Lexicon, according to Adler) presumably stems from a particular passage/context but is not reflected by anything in LSJ s.v.
[2] Bernhardy deleted to/ "the" here; Adler prints it but in square brackets. With or without it, it is unclear whether this should be understood as a single phrase or two, i.e. (as transmitted) 'colt's bite' and '(colt's) snorting'. (For snorting, see generally phi 746.) Either way, the first noun, transmitted as dh=gma, has been queried. Küster emended it to di/wgma "pursuit", comparing pwlikoi=s diw/gmasi at Hesychius pi4497; Hemsterhuis preferred dei=gma or paradei=gma on the basis of Etymologicum Magnum 698.15 ("a colt's example").
