Adler number: pi,2058
Translated headword: blow kisses!
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
In the Epigrams: "play the kiss on your own; blow kisses to yourself in vain." Meaning flatter, charm.
Greek Original:
*po/ppuze: e)n *)epigra/mmasi: pai=ze mo/nh to\ fi/lhma: ma/thn po/ppuze seauth=|. a)nti\ tou= kola/keue, kh/lei.
Notes:
This second-person singular imperative is from the onomatopoeic verb for the sound of smacking the lips in calling horses and other animals (cf. pi 2059), or blowing kisses to someone out of reach.
In Greek Anthology 5.245.5, cited here, Macedonius the Consul sarcastically continues "with lips bare, not mingled with someone else", suggesting that the girl will not have success beyond practising narcissistic kisses blown to herself. Compare 5.285, where the writer uses the verb for giving imitation kisses around the girdle of a girl. See another extract from Greek Anthology 5.245 at kappa 1694.
