Headword: *pino/essa
Adler number: pi,1620
Translated headword: dirty
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] filthy, squalid. "I Virtue mourn, sitting heavy-hearted, with shorn hair, dirty, because of a judgment, because it was not the virtue of the Pelasgians that obtained victory, but their deceit."
Greek Original:
*pino/essa: r(upw=sa, au)xmw=sa. qumobarh\s *)areta\ mu/romai e(zome/na, a)plo/kamos, pino/essa, dia\ kri/sin, o(/ti *pelasgw=n ou)k a)reta\ nika=n e)/llaxen, a)lla\ do/los.
Notes:
The headword, feminine nominative singular of the adjective pino/eis (a rare poetic variant of pinaro/s, pi 1616), is presumably extracted from the quotation given.
[1] Greek Anthology 7.146.2-4 (Antipater of Sidon), on the tomb of Aias; cf. Gow and Page (vol. I, 13), (vol. II, 39-40), and a further extract from this epigram at theta 567. For the Pelasgians, see pi 934. Ajax's tomb was traditionally situated on a rocky headland at Rhoiteion, the southern entrance into the Hellespont (Barrington Atlas map 51 grid G4); cf. Gow and Page (vol. II, 39). Inasmuch as Aias was confounded and led to suicide, not so much by argument with aboriginal Greeks, but by the shrewdness of one of the other Greek leaders on their joint expedition to Troy--namely Odysseus--Gow and Page (vol. II, 40) suggest that "Pelasgians" might be better interpreted as "Argives".
