Headword: *peri/news
Adler number: pi,1203
Translated headword: ship-board passengers
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] the superfluous men on board the ship, such as slaves.
Greek Original:
*peri/news: tou\s perittou\s th=| nhi\+ e)piba/tas, oi(=on dou/lous.
Notes:
This headword, an accusative plural, is used by Thucydides 1.10.4 in his calculations of the size of the expedition against Troy. Here, and again at the start of the next entry pi 1204 (q.v.), the scholia to that passage struggle to gloss it. For its actual sense, here, see rather Hornblower ad loc.: 'this word [...] means basically one who is on a ship but not of the ship's company [...] It came to mean a cargo clerk, but Thuc. uses it in its more general and original sense'; cf. Casson 319 n.83.
Besides pi 1204, cf. also pi 2970.
