Headword: *perii/staso
Adler number: pi,1163
Translated headword: stand aside, stand beside
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] assist, protect.
Greek Original:
*perii/staso: a)ntilabou=, periske/pason.
Notes:
= Synagoge, Photius pi698 Theodoridis -- where however the second gloss is perisko/phson ("examine"). Either way, these glosses are not easy to parallel as synonyms for the headword, and in themselves are capable of a wide range of meanings ("resist, screen off" are also possibilities). They are interpreted here, by WH, on the basis of a late scholium to Aristophanes, Clouds 595, where Aristophanes' phrase a)mfi/ moi au)=te *foi=b' a)/nac is glossed with perii/staso (the present headword) and boh/qei moi ("assist me").
Otherwise this form of perii/sthmi (present middle imperative, second person singular) is attested only in the sense of "avoid" (see pi 1162), chiefly in two letters of St Paul: Titus 3:9 and 2 Timothy 2:16 -- the latter cited by both Adler and, latterly, Theodoridis -- and in commentary thereto; see also Hesychius pi1718. Theodoridis also mentions, with apparent approval, Cobet's emendation (accepted by Naber) of the first gloss from a)ntilabou= to a)nti\ tou= eu)labou=.
For this verb see also pi 1162, pi 1164.
