Adler number: phi,826

Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning they] having protected. Herodotus [sc. uses the word].[1]
Also [sc. attested is] fula/casa [(she) "having guarded"], [meaning she] having watched for an opportunity, having kept timely watch. Arrian[2] [writes]: "having kept watch for her father when he was away, she promises to betray the fort to Tatius."[3]
Greek Original:
*fula/cantes: e)pithrh/santes. *(hro/dotos. kai\ *fula/casa, kairofulakh/sasa, eu)kai/rws e)pithrh/sasa. *)arriano/s: h( de\ to\n pate/ra fula/casa a)podhmou=nta u(pisxnei=tai *tati/w| prodw/sein to\ frou/rion.
Notes:
[1] The headword is aorist active participle of fula/ssw, masculine nominative plural; from a gloss on Herodotus 5.12.2, where it occurs.
[2] Not Arrian but Appian. According to de Boor (and Adler), Bernhardy thought the name of Arrian had been transferred to this entry from the next (phi 827). De Boor says that such explanations are not in general possible for the misattribution of quotations taken from the Excerpts made for Constantine Porphyrogenitus.
[3] Appian, Basilica fr. 3; quoted already at tau 150.
