Notes:
Quintus Fabius Pictor (cf. pi 1594), the first Roman historian (C3 BC), wrote in Greek a history of the first and second Punic Wars. Livy refers to him as scriptorum antiquissimus (1.44.2: web address 1). The family acquired the cognomen Pictor from the historian's grandfather, who learned painting among the Etruscans.
Adler notes that Valesius (Henri de Valois, 1603-1676) attributed the present entry to Polybius.
