Headword: *ou)loqutei=n
Adler number: omicron,907
Translated headword: to offer a whole sacrifice, to strew sacred barley
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] to pour barley-groats on the sacrifices. For they used to call the barley-groats ou)lai/ in contrast to the barley-cakes, which were barley ground[1] by the mill; for formerly they used to bend[2] the barley-groats when eating them, the processing of them having not yet been discovered. And up to the present time those who sacrifice pour barley-groats on the libations, since [they are] a symbol of the ancient food; but the round cakes of the recent era, that is of the subsequent [one].

Notes:
cf. scholia A and D on Homer, Iliad 1.449, where ou)loxu/tas (sic: accusative plural of ou)loxu/tai) occurs (web address 1). See also psi 35.
[1] Adler reports that ms F reads kateyhtisme/na (as at psi 35); the other manuscripts have kateyhnisme/na. Various emendations have been suggested, all with essentially the same meaning: kateyhgme/na Stephanus (Henri Estienne); kateyaisme/na Hemsterhuis, kateyhme/na Toup.
[2] Adler reports that ms M offers the variant e)ka/ptonto "they used to gulp down" and G reads e)ko/ptonto; the editio princeps of Chalcocondyles substituted the active form e)/kopton "they used to chop/pound."
