Adler number: omicron,27
Translated headword: pears
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] wild pears [achrades], or pears [apioi].
Greek Original:
*)/ogxnai: a)xra/des, h)\ a)/pioi.
Notes:
Same or similar entry in other lexica; see the references at Photius omicron24 Theodoridis. The second of the glosses comes from the scholia to Homer, Odyssey 7.115, from where the headword is quoted.
The a)/pios is the common pear (Pyrus communis, alpha 3194, alpha 3195, alpha 3197) of which the o)/gxnh is a variety. Compare Theophrastus, Enquiry into Plants 2.5.6, where the o)/gxnh is associated with cultivated trees. The a)xra/s, as also the a)/xerdos, is the wild pear (pyrus amygdaliformis or spinosa), usually planted as a defensive hedge in ancient Greece, but also eaten. See, for example, Eumaeus' farm at Homer, Odyssey 14.10 (web address 1); also also alpha 4713.
