Headword: *ni/kaia
Adler number: nu,380
Translated headword: Nikaia, Nicaea
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Name of a city of Bithynia;[1] and by it flows a river called Pharnoutis.[2]
[sc. Originally] a colony of the Bottiaeans,[3] it was also called Antigoneia,[4] but changed its name to that of Nike, the wife of Lysimachus.[5] Alternatively it has the same name, if that woman was called Nikaia. There is also a Nikaia in Illyria[6] and in India[7] and on the island of Kyrnos [ = Corsica] and in Leuktra[8] and of the Celts[9] and of the Epiknemidian Lokrians[10] and near Thermopylae and [in] Thrace. Many notable men come from it. Its ethnikon [is] Nikaieus and Nikaeus -- but if, they say, it is Nikaios, the word has an acute accent on the penultima: for [it is] *nikai/a.
