Headword: *nhri/on
Adler number: nu,334
Translated headword: sea-snail
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Possibly a diminutive of nêritês, so that [it would be derived] from nêros ["fresh; water"]. Hence a sea-snail would also be a Nêrion.
Greek Original:
*nhri/on. i)/sws o( nhri/ths, u(pokoristikw=s, i(/na e)k tou= nhro/s. o(/qen o( nhri/ths ei)/h kai\ to\ *nhri/on.
Notes:
The unglossed headword nhri/on, accented thus, is not otherwise attested (though nh/rion is a word for oleander: see LSJ s.v.)
The body of the entry (together with the entirety of nu 335, q.v.) is a marginal addition in ms M. Whoever added it is guessing at the meaning of nhri/on, which looks like a diminutive of nhro/s "fresh", (later) "water". He associates it with another form apparently derived from nhro/s, nhrei/ths.
