Headword: *nh=a
Adler number: nu,296
Translated headword: ship
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[nh=a is the same as] nau=n,[1] [meaning] boat.
But it is also made clear in the [commentaries] on the Iliad that ploi=a ["boats"] differ from nh=es ["ships"], as the ancients designated them.[2]
Greek Original:
*nh=a: nau=n, ploi=on. o(/ti de\ diafe/rei ploi=a nhw=n, w(s oi( palaioi\ parashmeiou=ntai, dedh/lwtai kai\ e)n toi=s ei)s th\n *)ilia/da.
Notes:
The headword is epic accusative singular of nau=s; the first gloss is the Attic form. In non-literary Hellenistic Greek nau=s was replaced by ploi=on.
cf. nu 303; also nu 2, nu 353.
[1] From the scholia to Homer, Iliad 1.141, where the headword occurs.
[2] This supplementary comment is a marginal addition in ms M, which had a scholarly owner.
