Headword: *neike/sai
Adler number: nu,283
Translated headword: to revile
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
In Homer [it means] to slander, but not to judge.
Greek Original:
*neike/sai: par' *(omh/rw| to\ loidorh=sai, a)ll' ou) to\ kri=nai.
Notes:
The headword is aorist infinitive of the verb neike/w. Attested only here, it is perhaps quoted from somewhere, though the semantic distinction made in the gloss comes from Homeric scholia on another part of this verb; see the scholia to Iliad 7.161 (nei/kess') and to Iliad 24.29 (nei/kesse).
See also nu 284, nu 285, nu 286 and nu 287; cf. Apollonius' Homeric Lexicon and Photius nu93 Theodoridis (s.v. nei=kos), Etymologicum Gudianum s.v. neikw= and Etymologicum Magnum s.v. neikei/h|si. Hesychius nu226 s.v. nei/kesen accepts both meanings.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; epic
