Headword: *me/teimi
Adler number: mu,782
Translated headword: I pursue, I go after
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
[Meaning] I examine, I interrogate.
I come after/pursue.
Greek Original:
*me/teimi: e)ceta/zw, a)nakri/nw. mete/rxomai.
Notes:
The last gloss (cf. mu 789) is that of the Synagoge, Photius' Lexicon (mu343 Theodoridis) and the Anecdota graeca (ed. L. Bachmann) 299.28; cf. the scholia to Homer, Iliad 6.341, from where the headword is taken to be quoted.
The previous two glosses refer to the (presumably hostile) examination of witnesses and accused in judicial or religious proceedings (cf. mu 784), in much the same way as "go after" is used today; this sense appears later than those covered by LSJ.
Keywords: definition; dialects, grammar, and etymology; epic; ethics; law; religion
