[1] Pindar, Olympian 1.1-2 (web address 1), mega/noros e)/coxa plou/tou ["beyond lordly wealth"], describing the pre-eminence of gold.
[2] "Gold/wealth is the sinews of war" is proverbial, and not otherwise attributed to Pindar. The saying is quoted in the Pindar scholia to Olympian 1.4b, Appian (Civil War 4.12.99), Plutarch (Agis and Cleomenes 48.1.1), and nu 266, which quotes George of Pisidia (the seventh-century AD Byzantine poet), Heraclias 1.163-4. George's lines contain the phrase neu=ra th=s ma/xhs ["sinews of battle"] with reference to wealth; "Pindar" in the present entry is thus surely an error for Pisides.
