The verb maxla/w (a variant of maxleu/omai) is first attested as a present participle -- but in other cases -- in Clement of Alexandria, e.g. Paedagogus 3.3.21: "fathers often unwittingly have sex with a child acting as a prostitute or daughters acting wantonly, unaware of the children left as foundlings; and the power of this evil commingling reveals those who have been born that way, when they are men".
