Headword: *mwro/teros *mwru/xou
Adler number: mu,1343
Translated headword: more stupid than Morychos; more stupid than Morychus
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
Polemon[1] [says] that this [proverb] is used by the Sicilians, thus: "you are more stupid than Morychus, who having left things indoors sits outside the house".[2] Morychus, among them, [is] Dionysus [referred to] by an epithet, because of his face being soiled in the vintage with must and figs. [The verb] moru/cai ['to soil'] [means] to stain. At any rate Homer says memoruxhme/nos [sc. for] memolumme/nos.[3] He [sc. Dionysus] was accused of simplemindedness, because his statue stood outside the temple in the open air, next to the entrance. [The proverb] is applied to those who do something simple-minded.
