Headword: *mniaro/n
Adler number: mu,1172
Translated headword: mossy, soft
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
"But accept a garment of a rug, mossy, with thick wool,[1] like a flowery purple."[2]
Greek Original:
*mniaro/n. a)lla\ de/xeu mniaroi=o baqurrai/noio ta/phtos e)/nduton, eu)anqei= porfu/rh| ei)do/menon.
Notes:
The unglossed headword is the masculine accusative singular or neuter nominative/accusative singular of the rare adjective mniaro/s. (Its epic/poetic genitive singular occurs in the quotation given.) Evidently quoted from somewhere, but in fact attested only here.
The quotation is from Greek Anthology 6.250.3-4 (Antiphilus), on the poet's gifts to a lady; cf. Gow and Page vol. I (90-91); vol. II (116-117); and further extracts from this epigram at epsilon 777, epsiloniota 197, lambda 620, and nu 36.
[1] "with thick wool" in the present entry is spelled baqurrai/noio, as if from an adjective baqu/rrainos. However, LSJ (web address 1) and Paton's Loeb spell this adjective baqu/rrhnos, reading h rather than ai.
[2] Alternatively, the passage might be translated (removing Adler's comma, which is not printed in Paton): "but accept a garment, which seems like a flowery purple of a rug, mossy, with thick wool."
