"To/for the daughter of Lykomedeios, who loves to play with knucklebones."[1]
Greek Original:
*lukomh/deios. th=| *lukomhdei/ou paidi\ filastraga/lh|.
Notes:
Greek Anthology 6.276.6 (attributed to Antipater of Sidon), a maiden, Hippe, dedicates childhood toys to Artemis on the occasion of her wedding; quoted already at iota 425; cf. Gow and Page (vol. I, 28) and (vol. II, 75-76).
The form of the patronymic in the quotation has elicited scholarly emendations. Gow and Page note (vol. I, 28) that here the Suda follows the Anthologia Palatina (AP) in reading the genitive ending -dei/ou. However, R.F.P. Brunck (Alsatian scholar, 1729-1803), perhaps thinking that some AP scribe did not understand the adjectival patronymic, instead suggested *lukomhdei/w|. In line with this, Gow and Page (ibid.) transmit *lukomhdei/a|, which they argue (vol. II, 76) becomes a bit easier to motivate. Modern editors (e.g. Paton, 446-447) incline toward the emendation advanced by A. Meineke (German classicist, 1790-1870): -dei/dou. But this ending generally suggests simple patrilineal descent, and, as the epigram is evidently epideictic, there is no plausible reason--as Gow and Page further observe (vol. II, 76)--for gesturing at Hippe's grandfather rather than her father.
[1] On playing with knucklebones, see alpha 4250. On Hippe's persisting fondness for the game and its hint as to her age, cf. iota 425 note.
