Headword: *lu/kaion
Adler number: lambda,799
Translated headword: Lykaion, Lycaeum
Vetting Status: high
Translation:
A name of a place.[1] Also [sc. attested is the related adjective] Lykaios.[2]
Greek Original:
*lu/kaion: o)/noma to/pou. kai\ *lukai=os.
Notes:
[1] Lykaion was the name of a mountain in the Peloponnese (in southwestern Arkadia, Barrington Atlas map 58 grid B3); Pausanias 8.38.2ff. There was also a city called Lykaia in Arkadia. This appears to be, as identified by Walbank (p. 522), a town by the River Alpheios (alpha 1448), below its conjunction with the River Lousios (also Gortynios, cf. alpha 1448 (end)), but not located in the Barrington Atlas. The highlands town of Lykoa is some 30km east-northeast of the mountain and the rivers' confluence (cf. Barrington Atlas map 58 grid C2). (The name Lykeion is quite different: see lambda 801, lambda 802.)
[2] The ethnikon of the Arkadian city mentioned in the preceding note: see Stephanus of Byzantium s.v. But also and more broadly an adjective/epithet meaning 'Arkadian', used especially of Zeus. See LSJ s.v.
